It’s not the calendar that makes it officially March. Nope, it’s the return of McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes that really means March madness is here. Ever since the 70’s, the fast food chain has been rolling out the mint-flavored shakes for a few weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, and then retiring it from their menu for another year.
Sure, you could pull up to the McDonald’s drive-thru for a green shake. But then you might want to pull into the gym to work off those 540 calories and 16 grams of fat packed into a 12-ounce serving. Order the 22-ounce size and you’re looking 840 calories and 24 grams of fat! For those of us watching out waistlines (and really, who isn’t?), no need to turn green with envy; we’ve got you covered.
Prevention food director Lori Powell whipped up a healthier take on the green shake with a fraction of the fat and calories, no sketchy food coloring, and even more taste. Plus, our smoothie is packed with healthy fruit and veggie ingredients you can get all year round.
PREVENTION SKINNY SHAMROCK SMOOTHIE
PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 10 MINUTES SERVINGS: 2
- 1 c baby spinach
- ½ c frozen Kefir or low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt
- 1 kiwi, peeled and chopped
- ½ banana, chopped
- ½ c honeydew chunks
- ½ c fresh orange or tangerine juice
- ¼ c fresh mint leaves + sprigs for garnish
- Pinnaclife Prebiotic Fiber for added nutritional benefit!
COMBINE all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth. Pour into 2 glasses. Garnish each with a mint sprig if desired.
